East Marietta to Honor Blake Mahoney

This season, East Marietta National Little League is honoring one of its own players, Blake Mahoney, along with the whole Mahoney family.

The Mahoneys spent the last 13 years as an integral part of East Marietta. Mom Dawn, was a board member for many years, as well as team mom and team nurse for many of her sons’ teams. Dad Bill, was an assistant coach, threw countless batting practice sessions and often worked the scoreboard.

Their oldest son, Will, who is now a senior at Wheeler High School, played at East Marietta from his start in Tee Ball at age 4 through the Intermediate league at age 13. And the youngest son, Blake, literally grew up at East Marietta. A “next generation” baseball player, following in his brother’s footsteps, Blake began his own baseball career playing Tee Ball at age 4. He continued playing into his Major League season. Blake played on numerous All-Star teams, as well as the park’s travel team, the 12U Spikes.

This past April 19th, we were all devastated to hear that Blake, age 11, had died in an accident. Blake’s absence has created a void that will never be filled.

Blake was a baseball player. He was either out on the field showing his great technique or watching intently from the dugout soaking up the game atop his favorite seat, the baseball bucket. Blake was a kind person, welcoming to all new players at the park. Blake was also a fierce competitor, playing with toughness and determination.

In the last few years, Blake chose the #12 for his uniform. We will honor Blake this year by proudly wearing a #12 patch on our sleeve, and we will officially retire the #12 at the end of the season. The #12 will be displayed prominently on Field 3.

Field 1 has been named for the family and will now be called, “Mahoney Field”.

The Mahoneys established a scholarship in Blake’s name. This scholarship will be awarded to aspiring players at EMNLL who need financial assistance and want to continue Blake’s spirit and love of the game.

We will forever miss Blake and think of him often. He continues to be a part of the conversations among our teams and at our houses. He will not be forgotten. We dedicate this East Marietta season to Blake Mahoney – always our “12th” man! This season, have fun, slide, and play for Blake!
